Discovery High School held its twelfth annual Cupcake Day on Friday, September 5th, 2025. Cupcake Day was started to honor the legacy of Maggie Daniels, a beloved guidance counselor at Discovery. After the loss of Daniels in 2014, Discovery High School students made it a tradition to bring Daniels’ favorite treats, cupcakes, to school. This is to celebrate Daniels’ birthday on September 3rd.
“We tragically lost our counselor, Maggie Daniels, and we wanted to do this as a way to honor her,” said English teacher Geoff Crosson. “For a moment, we pause our focus on academics and celebrate life,” he explained.
This year, Discovery students brought in an impressive 1,239 cupcakes for everyone to enjoy. The Newton Police Department also joined in the celebration and ate cupcakes with everyone.
“I’m happy and sad at the same time,”said senior Imagine Dyer. “I’m sad this is the last year I get to celebrate with all of my friends and get to have cupcakes before I graduate, but I’m happy that I’m getting to enjoy it while the moment is still here.”
Students didn’t just enjoy cupcakes on Cupcake Day. They also spent time socializing and enjoying the outdoors. Overall, Cupcake Day serves as a reminder to appreciate the little things in life and to recognize that life is sacred.
