Story by Sophia Williams

As the second week of the 2025-2026 school year comes to a close, so does the first of many spirit weeks here at Discovery High School. This spirit week marks the beginning of the school year as students transition from summer back into school, and the themes reflect this transition.

On Tuesday, the theme was “Missing Summer Break.” Students dressed up in sunglasses, sun hats, and their most summer-themed clothes to celebrate the first few weeks of school by mourning the loss of summer break.

Wednesday’s theme was Pirates vs. Mermaids, turning the school into a contest between two very popular sea-themed costumes. “I love it because summer is my favorite season, and I also love mermaids,” said Senior Colson Whitley. Most of the students chose to dress up as pirates, but people still enjoyed the theme either way.

Thursday’s theme was Dress to Impress. Students dressed up and showcased their best outfits, ranging anywhere from dresses and suits to some people who dressed up in full costumes.

Finally, on Friday the theme was Bakers vs. Chefs in honor of our annual Cupcake Day. Students and teachers dressed up in aprons and baking hats, brought in cupcakes, and spent most of their day talking with each other and enjoying the cupcakes that everyone brought.

Discovery has a multitude of spirit weeks throughout the year, turning the school into a mashup of different costumes and outfits as students and teachers alike show their school spirit. “I love participating in spirit week, really no matter what,” said Cooper Scharf. “It’s always a chance to be able to dress differently than you normally would and see how different people interpret different themes.”
