Dual-Immersion Overview

North Newton Elementary is proud to offer a Spanish Dual Language Immersion program beginning in 1st Grade and extending through 5th Grade.

The Dual- Immersion program at North Newton is an exciting opportunity for parents who want their children to have the advantages of a rigorous academic program while also learning two languages – English and Spanish. In the Dual-Immersion program, Spanish is the language in which instruction is delivered, rather than taught as a separate subject.

How Does the 50-50 Model Work?

In our 50-50 model, English speakers, native speakers of Spanish and bilingual speakers learn alongside each other. Two teachers share the teaching responsibility for all the subjects in the curriculum. At least 50% of the core academic instruction will take place in Spanish language.

The Spanish-speaking teacher will speak in Spanish and communicate using a range of engaging strategies including pictures, songs, games, body language, expressions, drama and pantomime. Children at this age are skilled at picking up language in meaningful contexts. Shortly after the start of the school year, students will also speak only in Spanish during the Spanish days and only in English during English class. At the completion of elementary school students will be on their way to becoming bi-literate and bilingual in Spanish and English.

*Please note: At this time, we are only accepting students into our 1st Grade program unless your student is transferring from another similar Spanish Immersion Program and will be considered on an individual basis and we have an opening in the grade level in which you are interested. Please contact the school directly if you are interested in entering the program beyond 1st Grade.
